Why is it necessary to measure the pH level in a pond?

For a pond, the pH value is very important. The plants and animals that live in it benefit most from an optimal environment and this includes a good pH value. The exact value depends on the specific needs of the organisms in the water. The balance of the water is determined by the bacteria and the oxygen plants which, through co2, change the acidity and thus the pH value of the water. During the night the pH value decreases because plants do not absorb co2 and the acidity increases and during the day the plants absorb co2 and the pH value increases again. With a measuring device from Nieuwkoop you can make a reliable measurement and obtain reliable data on which you can monitor the pH value of the pond. It is not possible to control the pH value of the pond with additives, but it is possible to add plants or install a biological filter. It is important that when you have a koi pond that you often test the values in the water.

How can you test the pH level in a pond?

When you have a pond you can test/measure the pH level in the pond in different ways. The most simple way is to use pH test strips. You hang these briefly in the water in the pond or in the sample that was taken from the pond. Then the pH test strip discolors based on the pH value of the water. However, this remains an indication and will never give the exact pH value. If you want to measure more accurately and thus more reliably use a digital pH meter. A digital pH meter, depending on the model, measures the pH value of the water in 1 or 2 decimal places. How does a pH meter work in a pond?

For testing pond water, we recommend taking several samples and then testing them with a pH indicator or handheld meter, as these are very accurate. Measuring the pond water is done as follows:

Take a water sample from the pond with a pipette.
Fill a sample cup with the pond water from the pipette.
Use the digital pH meter/indicator to take an accurate measurement of the water in the sample cup.

Take this measurement in the evening and in the morning. Check that these values are good for koi carp or other fish living in the water.
