A psychrometer consists of a wet and dry thermometer. The wet thermometer is kept wet by a wet stocking around the meter's fluid reservoir. This measures the temperature of the wet stocking. The dry thermometer simply measures the temperature of the air. Evaporation causes the temperature of the wet stocking to drop, creating a temperature difference between the two thermometers, and the relative humidity can then be read via the table.
